Breadalbane
Map of Scotland - Blue area shows where Perthshire is .....................................

Breadalbane (Perthshire)
The name Breadalbane (pronounced bred-ahl-bin) means "the upland of Alban" and derives from the Gaelic word "braghaid", upper part, which turns up in a number of Scottish place names as "braid", and Alban, the ancient name for north Scotland.

When Gaelic speaking Irishmen, the Scotti, came over from Ireland in the early centuries of the Christian era and settled in an enclave on the coast of Argyll, the colony of Dalriada, they called the hill ground that seperated them from the land of the Picts "Druim-Alban", the backbone of Alban, and the region beyond those hills "Braghaid-Alban".

Today the Breadalbane area is known as the county of Perthshire but throughout this section we will call the area by its proper name Breadalbane. In this section you can find out the history of the area, the numerous landmarks, walks that are available, and several vistor attractions.
